The name 'cello is an abbreviation of violoncello; accordingly it is more correctly written with an apostrophe ('cello). This is a wonderful instrument with unlimited expressive qualities. The range is large and it can play searing high notes and then switch to playing the bass line in an ensemble. To master the 'cello (as with any string instrument) it is best to start young. You will always find places to play in orchestras and chamber ensembles. The 'cello also has a huge repertoire of solo music available.
Starting age From 7 years upwards. An early start recommended.
