Often referred to as string bass or just "bass", no orchestra is complete without the depth added by this instrument. Although solos are quite rare, you will be an essential member of any ensemble - it's when you stop playing that everyone notices. Progress can be rapid compared to other members of the string family. Bass can be the ideal instrument for late starters or established players of other instruments who seek a more sociable instrument.
The bass is also a key member of folk and jazz bands, and many bass players will also learn the bass guitar which is essentially a sideways version of the same instrument. This can be your entry into the world of rock, so learning the double bass can be an entry into almost any ensemble. It is also the only member of the string family which is welcomed in the wind band where it provides an extra depth and colour.
