The flute is the highest of the woodwind family, and has a bright sound which flies over the top of the orchestra. It has a small cousin called the fife which can be an excellent way to start for small hands. Starting age Most teachers recommend 7/8 years, depending on size, but you can start on the fife from the age of 7. Flutes with curved head-joints are available for younger players
