Learning the piano can start as early as interest is shown. Most children of six or seven can cope. A very small hand spread could pose limitations eventually but would not prevent considerable progress being made and much enjoyment gained. The opportunity for playing with others is limited until the pianist gains a fairly high standard and many pianists also play other instruments in ensembles. It should be remembered that a piano needs to be professionally tuned at approximately six monthly intervals and this can cost around £50.
