Viola
The viola is a slightly larger version of the violin and serves the role of the alto part in ensembles. It has a mellow tone and is capable of wonderful solo playing. More often it provides support for the violins in the orchestra and chamber ensembles. The viola is rarely an instrument on which to start, but players often move to it after having spent time learning the violin.
