The string family, Violin, Viola, Cello and Double Bass, provide the essential nucleus of the orchestra, indeed they can form an orchestra by themselves. They have had more music written for them over the centuries than any other family of instruments and are still an essential part of modern music making. They frequently play as a family with 2 violins, viola and cello forming a string quartet. The double bass has also found its own niche as the bass line in jazz and folk groups (Bass players often "double" on bass guitar) .
One unique element of being an orchestral string player is that you are never on your own. If you are part of the violin section you may have a dozen or more players playing exactly the same part as you so you become part of one big "instrument".
More modern forms of music also embrace various elements of the string family, with string quartets frequently appearing with rock bands. Electric violins are becoming ever more popular, and opportunities in Jazz and Folk music as well.
Many young players start by learning in groups - a really friendly and effective way to gain confidence. Violinists can start from the age of 6 and there are many sizes of instrument available to suit all sizes of pupil. Student instruments are very affordable, but they are also readily available from Kent Music hire stock, so there is no need to buy until a full size instrument is required.
