Oddity: A CPD day with former ‘Stomp’ members

On the 27th April we were excited to welcome workshop tutors from ‘Oddity’ to Gravesham for a whole day of lesson observation opportunities and CPD.

The Oddity tutors are former members of the ‘Stomp’ show who throughout the day demonstrated how to make music on bin lids, plungers, window blinds, toilet pipes, pencils, books, chairs, tubes and almost anything else! The junk percussion was intertwined with engaging humour and energetic rhythm games and the activities enabled the pupils to experience deep musical learning which explored the interrelated dimensions of music.

Local teachers were invited to observe 4 class workshop sessions throughout the day. All the teachers who came along to observe found the experience really useful as it was valuable to see how the children reacted to the activities and how the activities could be adapted for different key stages.

The morning started with two hours of workshops for KS3 pupils at Meopham school, a highlight of which were the bin lids which were visually and aurally stunning in a rhythmic routine. The afternoon workshops took place at Cobham Primary School where KS1 and KS2 pupils took part in activities including body percussion improvisation, a sequence for plungers and an energetic, rhythmic class game involving whole bins! What was very evident throughout the day was that the Oddity approach engages every learner.

From 3.15-4pm the Oddity tutors led a question and answer session where the group discussed the day’s workshop experiences and explored further ideas for music learning with found objects around the classroom.
