Community Projects

We have recently been running music workshops with young people in Folkestone who find themselves in challenging circumstances by partnering with the Kent Refugee Action Network, Porchlight and Look Ahead charities. The former pair in respect of refugees who have arrived in the UK from Africa and the Middle East and the latter in respect of young people in the process of leaving care. In both cases we have been aiming to help those young people with a particular interest in music to integrate and participate in their local community and general peer group through music making and to raise their sense of well-being.

Both groups proved to have members who have shown us an interest in rap, beat-making and percussion and so we have engaged a group of tutors skilled in these areas to work with the young people. This has resulted in a lot of creative activity and enthusiasm for carrying on with the work, which we now hope to start taking into the broader context of Folkestone’s general musical life.
