Play by ear and develop your creativity, explore folk music, and learn from inspiring professional musicians from the English Folk Dance & song Society (EFDSS).

Take part in a day of creative folk music workshops with other young musicians and, if you want to, audition for the National Youth Folk Ensemble.

“I absolutely loved this experience…it was very empowering playing with others, playing traditional English tunes but making them our own.”

A girl with brown hair to her shoulders is playing a banjo. She is smiling and looking at a boy on the right of the picture. He has very short dark hair, and is also smiling. He appears to be playing a guitar, though it's mostly hidden. They are both seated.

The Youth Folk Sampler Days will happen online in May half-term 2021.

The Sampler Day is a day of creative online workshops designed to give young musicians a chance to play by ear, develop musical creativity and find out more about English folk music, and specifically the National Youth Folk Ensemble. The ensemble celebrates excellence in youth folk music, bringing together talented young folk musicians from across England to create and perform inspiring new arrangements of folk music and work with leading folk artists. The workshops will be led by master musicians in a relaxed and supportive environment.

“It was really enjoyable, and had the same fun, lively feel as a normal in-person sampler day!”

Five people are seated in a row towards us. on the left, a boy and a girl play wind instruments, a recorder and a clarinet. In the middle is the tutor, mid-sentence with mouth open and hands gesticulating. On the right, two boys play accordion.

To register for a Youth Folk Sampler Day you will need to:

  • be aged 12-18
  • live in England
  • be able to play confidently on your chosen instrument
