The Youth Folk Sampler Days will happen online in May half-term 2021.
The Sampler Day is a day of creative online workshops designed to give young musicians a chance to play by ear, develop musical creativity and find out more about English folk music, and specifically the National Youth Folk Ensemble. The ensemble celebrates excellence in youth folk music, bringing together talented young folk musicians from across England to create and perform inspiring new arrangements of folk music and work with leading folk artists. The workshops will be led by master musicians in a relaxed and supportive environment.
To register for a Youth Folk Sampler Day you will need to:
- be aged 12-18
- live in England
- be able to play confidently on your chosen instrument
Youth Folk Sampler Days are free to attend and open to players of any instrument. Playing and learning will be done by ear.
Each Sampler Day features:
- engaging workshops on Zoom introducing young musicians to folk tunes, techniques and creative ideas
- information session with Ensemble staff
- optional short audition, if you wish to apply for the National Youth Folk Ensemble (applicants need to be aged 14-18 on 1 September 2021).
This Sampler Day is associated with a Kent and the South East – but wherever you live in England, you can register for any of the eight dates. See other Sampler Day dates on the EFDSS website.
If you’ll be aged 14-18 on 1 September 2021 and you’re interested in joining the National Youth Folk Ensemble, you’ll need to attend a Sampler Day. Visit the EFDSS website to find out more about auditioning.
The National Youth Folk Ensemble is an English Folk Dance and Song Society programme, funded by Arts Council England.
