Canterbury String Orchestra is a welcoming new group for string players of all ages and abilities at Canterbury Music Centre. At each session you’ll explore a wide range of repertoire for violin, viola, cello, and double bass, while building confidence and skills as part of a friendly group. Led by experienced tutor Stelios Chatziiosifidis, you’ll learn to play as an ensemble, develop your technique, and enjoy making music with others from across the community!

Meet your tutor
Canterbury String Orchestra is led by Stelios Chatziiosifidis, a vibrant and supportive teacher with wide experience leading groups and lessons across East Kent. Stelios has been directing a similar ensemble in Thanet for nearly two years, where his fun and encouraging approach has helped players of all ages develop their skills and enjoy making music together.

Who is the group for?
This group is open to all string players aged 6 and above, including adults, at any playing level. It’s perfect for anyone in Canterbury who wants the chance to play as part of a string orchestra outside of school, whether you’re a beginner trying ensemble playing for the first time or an experienced musician looking to connect with others. With no pressure and plenty of support, it’s a welcoming space for everyone to enjoy music-making.
Are instruments provided?
Students will need to bring their own instruments.
How much does it cost to join?
We aim to make Music Centre membership as affordable and accessible as possible for everyone who wants to join the music community.
Once you’re a member you will have access to all groups at our Music Centres. You can join as many as you wish, no matter which centre you initially signed up at and make even more music!
Lessons are an additional charge. However, if you have lessons with us you will receive a 10% discount on your Music Centre membership.

Our belief is simple: music should be accessible to all. That’s why we offer financial assistance to help you learn and grow. Financial assistance is available for lessons, Music Centre membership, instrument hire, and more.

How do I join?
It’s simple! Just click the ‘join this group’ button on this page. Complete the form and add the course to your basket. Then go to your basket to finish your application by logging into your Kent Music online customer account.
If you don’t have an account, no worries – you can still apply by clicking the ‘Apply Here’ button. You’ll be guided through a few easy steps to create an account and complete your application.
 Once your application is done, you’ll receive further information about your lessons or ensemble.

What if I don’t have my own instrument?
We offer an instrument hire service at affordable rates. You’ll get a discount on your instrument hire if you have lessons with us! This allows students to access high-quality instruments without the need for a significant upfront investment.
