Celebrating 30 years of Romney Marsh Music Centre

by Sally Aviss, Founder and Centre Co-ordinator for Romney Marsh Music Centre.

With our Christmas Concert in December, we celebrated thirty years of the Romney Marsh Music Centre. The inaugural concert took place on Monday 5th December 1983 and, from small beginnings, we have grown in size and experience giving concerts on Romney Marsh in local parish churches, village halls, and open air concerts. We took part in Kent Music’s “World Largest Orchestra” Guinness Book of World Records attempt, and gave three concerts in Ardres in France, as well as hosting return visits from our friends across the Channel.

Over the years, members of RMMC have participated in combined string playing and choral days with Wealden Music Centre and Kent County Junior Singers; attended residential courses at Kent Music Summer School and Foremarke Hall in Repton, Derbyshire; and been accepted as members of Kent County Youth Orchestra and Kent County Choirs.

Several members of RMMC have continued with their musical and instrumental studies at University, with some taking up music as their profession.

At our Christmas Concert we formed the ReUNIon String Orchestra, welcoming back our leavers from the last academic year who are now studying at University – all of whom had been members of RMMC since they were six or seven years old – with the Friends’ of RMMC (formed in 1989) presenting them with Amazon Gift Vouchers as a small token of appreciation for all their dedication and hard work.
