Christmas classics, led by Benedict Collins Rice

On Friday 13 December the West Kent Youth Orchestra and West Kent Youth String Orchestra held their annual Christmas Concert at The Judd School, Tonbridge.  The Christmas spirit was in the air as family and friends were treated to mince pies and mulled wine before listening to confident performances of Benjamin Britten’s Simple Symphony, familiar excerpts from Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker, the second movement from the challenging Sibelius’ Second Symphony, and a selection of Christmas classics, led by new Conductor Benedict Collins Rice.

The orchestras rounded off the evening with Anderson’s Sleigh Ride, with audience participation on the famous whip ‘cracks’ during the piece. Giggles spilled from the performers and conductor when the audience didn’t quite hit the right beat, and everyone left merry and jolly.

The orchestras are held on Friday evenings at our Tonbridge Music Centre, and are open to advanced players of grade 5+ standard.  New players can come along for up to half a term for free to try out the groups.
