KMSS is coming! Are you packed yet?
It’s almost time…term’s wrapping up, you’ve got your confirmation email, you’ve definitely been practicing (…right?), and your Summer School course at Benenden is on the horizon.
But…what happens now?
Whether you’re counting down the days or feeling a little nervous (or both!), we’re here to help you get excited for what’s coming, and how to get ready.
So, what is KMSS exactly?
KMSS – Kent Music Summer School, or Summer School, or Benenden – has been running since 1948. Whatever you call it, it brings together young people from Kent and beyond at the beautiful Benenden School for residential music courses from one to six days long.

You’ll rehearse in fantastic spaces, perform in concerts, and – if you’re on one of the longer courses – you might also take part in Music at Night, a fun and informal mid-course showcase by students, for students.
You’ll meet others who love music as much as you, and still have plenty of time to relax, play sports, explore the site and enjoy yourself. Let’s not forget the food – the kitchens at Benenden are legendary and you’ll be treated to a (mostly) balanced diet of meals and snacks for all dietary needs each day!
The essentials:
We’ve got almost everything covered on the course, from teaching and meals to towels and accommodation. That said, you’ll need a few things of your own, of course!
- Bring comfy clothes for rehearsing, something smart for the concert, swimming clothes and trainers for sports, and a waterproof (just in case).
- Don’t forget your instrument, accessories and spare strings/reeds if needed.
- Personal items like toiletries and PJs. Special stuffed toys are more than welcome too.
- Bring a named water bottle – hydration is key!
- Pack a book, headphones or cards for downtime.
If there’s anything specific you need for your course, our team will email you well in advance. If you’ve arranged to hire an instrument or get financial assistance, that’s all sorted too. Still unsure? Just drop us a line at kmss@kent-music.com.

What if I’ve never been before?
You’re not alone! Every year we welcome first-time students who might have never stayed away from home before who have the time of their lives. Our pastoral team live onsite with you and are always on hand to chat, help or support you with whatever you need, from finding a rehearsal room to phoning home.
There’s also a Student Welfare Officer on hand throughout, plus our music tutors and ensemble leaders, who are absolute pros – many of them are also working performers, composers and educators.
Let’s not forget the most important members of the pastoral team – course dogs Humphrey and Wellington. They’re always happy to make new friends!
Life on course:
Expect full days of music – rehearsals, sectionals, performances and more, depending on your course – plus time to relax and have fun, swim, play sports and socialise. You’ll get to play and perform with others at your level, build confidence, and try new things.
Check out the example timetable at the bottom of the page to get a full idea of what your day might look like!
Some final thoughts…
- Don’t be nervous! Everyone’s in the same boat, and our team will help you settle in quickly.
- Ask questions if you’re unsure. Our staff (and dogs) are super friendly and know this place inside out.
- Be open to new experiences! KMSS is more than just the music – it’s a little slice of summer freedom like no other.
Whether you’re with us for just one night or nearly a week, we’re so excited to give you the best musical experience ever. KMSS is a summer tradition, a creative home from home – a place to make great music, great friends, and eat plenty of good grub. We can’t wait to welcome you!
