Hello from Gerry
In April, we were joined by our new Chief Executive, Gerry Sterling. Formerly Chief Executive of Bromley Youth Music Trust, Head of Lambeth Music Service, and most recently at Hartsdown Academy in Margate, Gerry brings a wealth of experience to Kent Music, and we’re delighted to have him leading our team.
As the academic year draws to a close, Gerry shares some of his highlights so far and his hopes for the future.
“At the end of April, I had the privilege of being warmly welcomed by the incredible Kent Music team. In just a short time, I’ve been deeply inspired by the breadth and depth of the work being delivered across Kent and Medway by our talented and passionate teachers and support team.
From visiting whole class MusicPlus projects in schools and observing the exceptional quality of ensemble rehearsals and individual tuition in our music centres, I’ve seen firsthand the diverse and inclusive impact of Kent Music and the dedication of all our staff. A particular highlight was attending the inspiring Orchestra One half-term course, where creativity and youth voice were truly at the heart of the experience.
Over the past few months, I’ve also had the pleasure of attending several performances, including the Medway Towns Music Centre end-of-term concert and Great Big Sing events in Folkestone and Canterbury, where more than 500 primary and secondary students from different schools came together to form mass choirs.
It was wonderful to witness the joy on the faces of the young performers as they sang to their audiences – and the obvious pride radiating from their families and supporters was truly moving.

Attending these performances have only strengthened my belief that every child should have the opportunity to experience the transformative power of music. I’m excited to work alongside the Kent Music team to help realise our shared vision:
Thank you to all the staff, students, schools, teachers, families and supporters involved in the work we do across Kent and Medway. It’s a joy to be part of an organisation where passionate people are involved at every level, and I’m excited for what’s to come.
Wishing you a wonderful, musical summer!”
