Home Orchestra ONE: Project 24 – Magic

A Broomstick Ride with Orchestra ONE

During the October half term, Orchestra ONE participants came together for our 24th project, with the theme of Magic having been chosen by young people who had taken part in previous projects. It was great to see so many familiar faces, but also to welcome a number of new young people to the project.

The musicians spent four days sharing their ideas and creating their new composition, performing this to friends and family on Thursday 24 October. With Joe Browne at the helm as Musical Director once again, our team of tutors supported the young people in creating an original composition which explored different aspects of magic, from witches and wizards, dragons, mystery and dark magic, to the showmanship of magicians including a fantastic live magic trick performed by Hayden as part of the set!

The piece opened with a bewitching chant and overture which introduced the different musical ideas that would be used throughout the piece. This was followed by a guitar driven rock section, gradually introducing all of the instrumental families and giving each section the chance to showcase their individual talents. The remainder of the piece included a waltz complete with original lyrics from our vocalists, and a finale entitled “Broomstick Ride”. Solos from Sophie and Bobby demonstrated the growing talent within the Orchestra ONE family, as well as showcasing the improvisational skills the young people develop as part of the project.

Thank you very much to Maidstone Girls’ Grammar School for hosting us, as well as a huge thank you to the entire Kent Music team and all of our wonderful young people who took part and made this yet another brilliant O1 project. We’ll see you again at Easter!
