Jazz music energy every week in Maidstone
Kent Youth Jazz Orchestra (KYJO) brings together talented young musicians to explore the of playing jazz music. The orchestra plays everything from classic swing and Latin jazz to big band arrangements, jazz-funk, fusion and contemporary jazz. Rehearsals are every week in Maidstone, and we perform at gigs across the county.
Members develop ensemble skills, improvisation, musicianship and performance confidence in a high-energy, supportive environment. KYJO has been a much-loved part of Kent’s music scene for over 40 years. Lead by experienced professional tutors, it’s helped generations of young musicians grow skills, friendships and love of jazz.
Now part of the Kent Music family, KYJO continues its proud tradition while creating even more opportunities for young jazz musicians across Kent & Medway. It’s a natural progression route for members of Maidstone Junior Jazz Band and other jazz groups and courses.

Meet your tutors
KYJO is led by Mike Austin and Dan Banks, two experienced jazz musicians and educators with a passion for helping young players grow in confidence and skill.
Mike is himself a former member of KYJO and returned over ten years ago, first as Assistant Musical Director and now leading the orchestra. A saxophonist and active performer, he knows first-hand the impact the group can have on young musicians. He’s passionate about helping the next generation develop their jazz skills.
Dan is a jazz pianist, composer and teacher based in Kent. Alongside performing with jazz groups across the UK, he teaches for Kent Music and works with young musicians through workshops, masterclasses and lessons. His wide musical background helps bring creativity, energy and a strong understanding of jazz to rehearsals.
