Kent County Youth Orchestra: Summer 2015

Star Wars by the sea!  Kent County Youth Orchestra, Winter Gardens – Margate

In August KCYO performed a block busting programme of film music at the Winter Gardens, Margate.  The programme was brimming with music written for or associated with the silver screen and from both sides of the Atlantic too! The inspiration for the programme was the concerto for saxophone by Hollywood movie composer Stanley Myers and was performed by John Harle. John, an International virtuoso and one of the UKs finest living musicians also lives locally in Kent and the opportunity to share a musical experience with him was one not be missed. Making her KCYO conducting debut and notably KCYO’s first female conductor was Caroline Hobbs- Smith. Under her direction the orchestra gave a confident and assured performance of works by Bliss, Mascagni, Moross, and two of the most prolific composers for the screen, John Williams and John Barry.

This was a fun but challenging programme which took hard work and much concentration throughout the preceding residential course held at Ashford School.  As usual, despite the hard work there was still much fun to be had in the social activities as organised by the KCYO social reps and there was even some time for our orchestra members to enjoy the Margate sea side in all its sunny, summer glory on concert day.

As we say goodbye to a very successful series of concerts in 2015 we look forward to the 2016 season and hope you may join us at Mote Hall, Maidstone on 2 January 2016 for KCYO’s first concert of the new season.
