An introduction to…CPD with Katie Teage

Each year Kent Music develops a CPD programme to support schoolteachers and music educators across Kent.

This year we have more courses than ever before. Our extensive, free programme offers face-to-face and online opportunities to upskill, develop knowledge, and gain expertise in music education

We pride ourselves in working with top practitioners in the music education field to bring you the highest quality CPD.

Throughout the programme, we have been delighted to work closely with music educator, consultant, performer, conductor and composer Katie Teage. Katie has helped us provide a series of sessions aimed at supporting non-specialist primary teachers – and anyone else interested!

Through this series of sessions, we aim to raise the confidence of all teachers delivering music at the early stages of children’s musical journey.

Our ‘An introduction to…’ 5-part series started in December 2021 with ‘An introduction to… notation’. In the session, Katie demystified music notation and provided practical routes into introducing activities around notation for KS1 and KS2 pupils.

We’ve been delighted to receive lots of glowing feedback from attendees. One teacher who attended the first session said:

“Thanks so much for the valuable session. Within 24 hours I was able to get back into the classroom and de-code rhythms with a Y2 class and a Y5 class. They really enjoyed working on mini white boards and I instantly knew who was making progress”

January 2022 brought the first session on repertoire in this 5-part series. Katie provided practical examples on a range of topics, from introducing pupils to Western Classical Music to active listening and engaging pupils in broader listening.

In February we will continue to explore repertoire. There is so much to cover and we cannot wait to hear how we can introduce pupils to even more genres or music and composer!

All our courses are twilight sessions and completely free, so they can be as accessible as possible to everyone interested.
