Kent County Youth Orchestra: Winter 2014

New leader, new conductor, new season and new year! KCYO began 2015 with a fresh and invigorated approach to a programme of memorable concert classics as performed to great acclaim at Mote Hall, Maidstone. Despite the cold winter weather the orchestra warmed up nicely under the baton of conductor, Michael Seal. Michael is not only associate conductor of the amazing City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and a celebrated conductor of some standing but we proudly claim him as our own having once led KCYO – how wonderful to have him return to conduct his old youth orchestra!

The orchestra worked very hard throughout the course though there was plenty of fun to be had after rehearsals with quiz night, disco and swimming to name a few things on offer. There was also a couple of fantastic insight sessions into the world of Alexander technique as shown by Joseph Sanders, professor in Alexander technique at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. The course was rounded off perfectly with our concert. The pride on all of our faces was clear to see. Not least of which on the face of our new leader Annie Pullar. With the Easter course next I think this could be a hard act to follow but I think KCYO are looking forward to the challenge! See you there!

‘This Christmas the Kent County Youth Orchestra truly excelled. After an intense four day course, the concert showcased how aside from just playing the notes, KCYO have the natural ability to express true passion and musicianship when faced with any programme. The orchestra continues to grow from strength to strength and an exciting Easter programme is on its way!’

Hear from the members – their top three reasons for being in KCYO:

It’s challenging, new and a good stepping stone to help me get where I want to be in the future (professional)

Learning from top professionals and being able to play with others at a high standard. Discovering new music as well as performing pieces that I have listened to and wanted to play. Social aspects of the course.

The excellent opportunities for high standard orchestral playing, getting to know good music in real depth, and to work with inspirational conductors and tutors.

KCYO is my only opportunity to be a part of an orchestra of this size and quality. Amazing people on the course, I’ve made friends for life here. Regularly choosing great repertoire and music I can’t play anywhere else.
